Floyd L. Covert, who taught for nearly 40 years in the Communication Design Department of Massachusetts College of Art, died Feb. 25 at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, N.Y., of complications from cancer. He was 73.

Professor Covert was a native of Lodi, N.Y. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1954 and master's degree in 1955 from the fine arts program at Syracuse University, where he also taught while doing graduate work.  Over the years Floyd taught painting, illustration, set design, and costume design at Massachusetts College of Art and was known as ''Uncle Floydie" by many of his students. Mr. Covert was an avid theatergoer and enjoyed playing Broadway show tunes on his piano.

Upon returning to Lodi in 1994, he mentored local artists and continued his own artistic work. Mr. Covert leaves a brother, James of Ottawa. No service was held, at his request. An exhibit of his work will be held June 10 at the Lodi Historical Building in Lodi.
