Artists and the Creative Economy
Our guest speaker,
Helena Fruscio, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics/Sculpture from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2007. A post-graduate internship in the Berkshires evolved into a paid position as a coordinator and then as director of the Berkshire Creative Economy Council in western Massachusetts. In 2011, Helene was appointed as the Creative Economy Industry Director for the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Her journey will offer you a unique perspective from a fellow artist and insight into the Commonwealth’s creative economy.

Creative Continuum: Business & the Creative Process
Want to develop skills in applying the creativity you’ve nurtured and developed as an artist to the business world? Businesses are in need of a more creative workforce in order to remain competitive. In this session, you will learn more about a unique program, developed jointly by MassArt and Bentley University. This “mini MBA” trains artists and designers to apply their creative skills and experience in solving business problems by working on live case studies. Project partners have included Fidelity Investments, Keyspan (National Grid), Constant Contact, Dunkin' Donuts, the Harvard Bookstore, Hill Holiday, Rule Broadcast, bocoup, and Reebok.

This session is about the Art Loan Program at The DeCordova. The museum is interested in energizing the inventory of artwork loaned to the Corporate Program by Boston area artists. The program accepts 2-D artwork. This is great exposure for artists!

Lessons from the Design Museum

The organization educates the public about the power of design through a decentralized network of physical and virtual exhibits. Fine artists and designers will gain insight into how an organization can evolve from an idea to reality. Learn about the power of collaboration, how to manage your time better, using apps and tools, researching existing models of success and making a mobile office work for you. Get ready for a crash introduction into the wild and woolly world of freelancing. Creative Relay co-founders and long-time freelancers, Ed Shems and Justin Perricone, will provide guidance on how to navigate the potential pitfalls and rewards of working as a freelance creative professional. They’ll cover everything from the first conversations with clients to completing successful projects that keep them happy and can lead to more work. You’ll learn tips and suggestions on conducting first meetings with clients, developing contracts, handling project revisions, invoicing, and how to deal with difficult clients. You’ll begin to treat your freelance work like a business and become more confident in your ability to work with clients, while enjoying more success.
