Alumni Obituaries

We recently learned of the passing of two MassArt alumni, Panos Ghikas '39 (Drawing and Painting) and Ashley McCann '11 (Art and Design).

Panos Ghikas died on Sunday, February 19, 2012.  He was born in 1917, in Malden, MA. He attended the Massachusetts College of Art and was a graduate of the Yale School of Fine Arts. He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship and studied with Willi Baumeister in Germany. He received a MacDowell Colony fellowship and the Blanche Colman Award. He taught at the Boston Museum School and MassArt. He was also a professor at Harvard Carpenter Center, Brown University, RISD, Bowdoin College, and George Washington University, St. Louis.

A master gilder and egg tempera expert, he executed a mural in gold leaf for the 110th floor restaurant, Windows on the World, at the World Trade Center, New York City.

He and his wife, Patience Haley Ghikas, restored historic murals by Barry Faulkner at the Averill Harriman estate in Harriman, N.Y. He lived and worked in Boston for 50 years before living in Maine. He and his wife maintained a studio at historic Fenway Studios. He is with ACME Galleries, Boston.


Ashley Ellen McCann age 25 of Hingham passed away Feb. 22, 2012 at home surrounded by her loving family. Ashley was a loving and caring person. She loved art and fashion design. She was a graduate of Hingham High School, Fisher Junior College, and Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She enjoyed designing clothing and making her designs into a finished product.
