DESCRIPTION:This event is full. Alumni Letterpress Workshop with Keith CrossSaturday, March 3, 2012 10am-4pmMass Art Press, Tower Building (9th floor)Keith Cross, keith@milkrow.com, 617.872.7585Workshop Description: Are you wrestling with the lack of texture and REAL type in your everyday pursuits? Then this letterpress workshop is the event for you. You&rsquo;ll hand-set text and display type, contending with over 350 cases of metal and wood type in our collection. Once you&rsquo;ve learned the ropes, leap from the turnbuckle and get ready for the melee&mdash;it&rsquo;s no-holds-barred letterpress posters! Learn how to quickly change colors on press with no wash-up. Set it and print it techniques escape the referee&rsquo;s call on &ldquo;delay of match.&rdquo; Grapple with composition and win with magnets. Concealing your identity is optional.Who Should Attend?MassArt Alumni who yearn to bring a little texture back into their lives with ink, paper and type. ScheduleRound 1 10:00 AM Be ready to get started&mdash;we&rsquo;ll get right into it! We&rsquo;ll set some impactful words from impressive type and construct our Ringside Broadside.Intermission  11:30 AM Lunch. There won&rsquo;t be time to venture far in search of sustinence so please bring your own lunch.Round 2 12:30 PM Letterpress Posters. We&rsquo;ll learn some quick techniques for printing larger type and making impromptu images using &ldquo;pressure prints.&rdquo;Aftermath 3:30 PM Cleanup and redistribution of type. Some Fine PrintIn this workshop we use inks and solvents and expect that participants are comfortable lifting 50 lbs. without assistance. Due to working space and equipment, this class is limited to 10-12 students. Time will be precious. Punctuality will be required to make full use of the time allotted. SafetyIt is everyone&rsquo;s duty to maintain a safe work environment. Please don&rsquo;t obstruct work areas or walkways with personal belongings, and pay close attention to safety measures covered in each class. Do not lift any type cases, gallies or other objects that seem too heavy. Ask for assistance of a fellow classmate or the instructor. Some other things to keep in mind:What to Wear/What NOT to WearIn general, you may elect to not wear any clothing or personal effects that you wouldn&rsquo;t want to get scuffed or get ink or other dirty stuff on. It is recommended that you wear a sturdy pair of shoes, jeans and a shirt that you can get dirty.Aprons: There are several aprons in the room, but you should either bring your own or wear clothes that can be ruined. Printing ink does not wash out. Hair/jewelry: The presses can snag your hair and jewelry, so tie long hair back, and don&rsquo;t wear dangling jewelry (necklaces and/or earrings).Shoes: Covered toe shoes with good support are recommended. Sandals are strongly discouraged. Any shoes that may compromise your stability walking through the shop is strongly discouraged. Rollers skates are a no-no :)Gloves: Vinyl, Latex or Nyprene gloves are good for those allergic to dust, and keep hands clean for paper handling. We&rsquo;ll have some in the shop, you might consider bringing your own.
